It takes a Dogtooth to heal the wound

These are raving days, it makes you cry and makes you laugh with what Greece is through. Distressed, penniless, miserable and lover of the official chaos, my country has little to offer speaking of material resources, but, then, why do you think my motto is "art will save us" ? Obviously, because nothing else could.

With ultimate pleasure and enthusiasm it is -- tears falling down my eyes and my heart beat imitating an ecstatic African drum -- that I am able to state that Dogtooth (Canine for french distribution and Kynodontas / Κυνόδοντας for us), being already short-listed as one of the 9 most prominent films in the Best Foreign Language Film category, it actually made it through. It is, weirdly enough, one of the 5 films to contest in the Academy Awards --a greek film, it has been a while we didn't see that, since Kakogiannis. Some call the film doomed and they are maybe right in principle: how come that what we know as a conservative and abiding by the American values film race ever had the guts to nominate such an avant-garde film that triumphed in Un Certain Regard category in Cannes on 2009 and being able to shock or least to bring uneasy feelings in many of its misplaced mainstream viewers?

I pray and I pray that Christos Stergioglou, Aggeliki Papoulia and Hristos Passalis and first and foremost Yorgos Lanthimos will have the bliss to grab uncle Oscar and walk down a red carpet starting from Syntagma Square till Propylaia (γιατί είναι και κατηφόρα) but I'm already proud enough to know that I will see them on the red carpet in 33 days.

GREEK films at The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival

The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival is delighted to announce that this year’s programme includes TWO films from GREECE This is part of a worldwide selection of over 190 feature films and over 110 shorts from more than 50 countries. The Festival runs from October 14 –October 29.

Greek FEATURES:

Dogtooth (Kynodontas): Dir, Yorgos Lanthimos

My Only Sunshine (Hayat var): Dir, Reha Erdem (Co-production with Turkey and Bulgaria)


(So strange, ομολογουμένως, μια συμπαραγωγή τριών μερών να περιγράφεται ως "ταινία από την Ελλάδα", ειδικά, μάλιστα όταν δεν είναι γυρισμένη στην ελληνική γλώσσα, ούτε περιλαμβάνει έλληνες συντελεστές or sth. Ξανά τίθεται αυτό το πολυκαιριασμένο θέμα της καταγωγής των ταινιών. Και είναι προ πολλού αποφασισμένο ότι την καταγωγή δεν καθορίζει μόνο αυτός που βάζει το χέρι στην τσέπη...)

A special day ή η μέρα που ο Γιώργος Λάνθιμος μας έκανε περήφανους

Αισθάνομαι περήφανη σήμερα. Για την ακρίβεια, φουσκώνω σαν παγώνι, που λέει ο λόγος, και πάει καιρός που το σινεμά της χώρας μου αδυνατούσε να με κάνει να νιώσω οτιδήποτε παρόμοιο. Ο Γιώργος Λάνθιμος, που η πρώτη του ταινία Κινέττα δεν έβρισκε διανομή για τους κινηματογράφους ούτε με σφαίρες και παίχτηκε κακήν-κακώς στο Nixon, τρομάρα μας, δεν το έβαλε κάτω, και να που φέρνει βραβείο από τις Κάννες, ύστερα από χρόνια και ζαμάνια. Ο Κυνόδοντάς του ή αλλιώς Canine ή αλλιώτικα Dogtooth κέρδισε το βραβείο καλύτερης ταινίας στο τμήμα Un Certain Regard του Φεστιβάλ των Καννών και προς το παρόν έχω μείνει άφωνη για να αρθρώσω οποιαδήποτε λέξη παραπάνω.

Συγχαρητήρια σε έναν από τους τελευταίους εναπομείναντες Δον Κιχότες του ελληνικού σινεμά.

Παρεπιπτόντως, ας πως συγχαρητήρια και στους υπόλοιπους συντελεστές, γιατί δεν το αξίζουν λιγότερο. Εύγε στην αγαπημένη Αγγελική Παπούλια, στο μοναδικό Χρήστο Στέργιογλου, στη Μαίρη Τσώνη και στο Χρήστο Πάσσαλη (κρίμα να μη δείτε και τι λένε πριν το μεγάλο γεγονός ) .
