My inability to construct a decent written flow these days (but, I will still try). Out of impatience to say it all without taking too long. Hinders the potentially elegant style of a journalistic text and promotes the fragmented, goal-oriented style of business plans. Bullet points, short descriptions, absence of rhetoric devices. Words are just the means of conveying meaning these days. Beauty in the words is a luxury. And luxury costs money.

The Hairdresser's Husband is here to welcome you
Roger Ebert, the man who knows too much, recently added Le Mari de La Coiffeuse (1990) -as the original French title goes- in his list of Great Movies. "It is about our foolish dreams", he writes. The Hairdresser's Husband is not only a great movie. It's a great, (imaginary) place, where people dare to be different, live disconnected from society and whichever norms it sets, where people are free to exist as they please with their sole compass crazy fantasies and childhood aspirations.
Jean Rochefort and Anna Galiena make an unusual couple; in his forties, he proposes the fist time he sees her, while she is about to finish giving him a haircut on a leather chair in her barber's shop. He doesn't even know her name. He pays and excuses himself before he leaves, only to come back two weeks after for one more haircut. She accepts his proposal before he has the time to tell her his name, let alone repeat the proposal itself. A calm life full of consuming passion awaits them.
After the most unconventional wedding scene I ever remember watching, after an uninterrupted fixation for one another, after many idle days and afternoons where Antoine does nothing but silently adores his long-awaited hairdresser wife Mathilde, the spell is broken. Ten years of peaceful co-existence, during which no friends, children or other incidents spoil their romantic bubble are too good to be true. Mathilde melancholically sways in her 50s print dresses and wavy hair, content with the present, but with a hidden fear for the future. Too scared of the realistic possibility of suddenly facing loss, she decides to leave first.

One Deadly Summer (1983)
I've seen and admired her in The Story of Adele H.(1975) Adolphe (2002) and other films in between. I've been following her secretly, blame it on the irresistible charm of hers. But it took One Deadly Summer (1983) to make me obsessed. I stood there eyes wide open; her natural beauty was only the bait. Then came her complicated character; Eliane was daring, tempting, playful. She was lost, sad, unstable. They said she loved men and gave in to pleasure, but she was planning to kill a couple of them, cause the thing she loved the most was her daddy.

Zazie in the Metro (1960): the Girl who Knew too much
Zazie is a ten-year-old girl who comes for a weekend from some provincial town to the one and only Paris, that messy metropole. That's how it's depicted by Louis Malle: heavy traffic due to the Metro strike, full of crazy tourists and weirdos, a city where cabaret, sightseeing and gourmet food coincides, a city where everything is possible.
Zazie in the Metro though was not burn straight on celluloid, but on paper, like many other brilliant things. Raymond Queneau felt like being naughty with the French language for once and wrote a book that "made the whole of France laugh,” acccording to Jean-Paul Rappeneau.
Zazie, the book, commences with the following sentence in the original text: "Doukipudonktan, se demanda Gabriel excédé." and no, I won't leave you without a translation: "Howcanaystinksotho, wondered Gabriel, exasperated." (thanks to bibliolathas). As you see, the very first word is not a word by any means, it's a germanic construction of many words put together and written in their phonetic equivalent. In French, the right way to write this would be: D'où qu'il pue donc tant?. The example means to give you an idea on the playfulness, cheekiness and wit it takes to write and read such a book. Because, reciting crazy, absurd stories is sometimes not enough; the language you choose as your vehicle plays its role, and, if being brilliant and unique is your aim, you're gonna have to fiddle with it at a certain extent and by no means take it at face value. Newspapers, schoolbooks and other comme il faut hardcovers are using a language you are not supposed to even hint at in everyday life, or you risk to sound like a lawyer.

The Past (2013)
When we are talking about actor's and actresse's vehicles, this is what we have in mind. Berenice Bejo certainly did not need any more vehicles for herself, after her triumphant silent worldwide-hit The Artist (2012), but she had to prove than she can be jovial no more; she had to be on the verge of a nervous break-down (sic), incapable to control her sentimental life or her acts, lost in the turmoil of mixed feelings.

The concert (2009)
It was not always clear that snobbery is the most problematic act of them all; it took me years to realise. Once upon a time I remember myself scoffing at people; as well as I remember my mother reproaching me with the who-do-you-think-you-are look, and that was probably the best thing she ever did. She taught me to treat my fellow humans as equals. Not with lengthy explanations of any kind, no; only with a transient mood, a sense of empathy I could not grasp at the time -it seemed as an act of unneeded kindness. Until my little self grew up to understand that status quo, education, looks, taste and so many other things that falsely define us in life are not a product of choice, but rather a mere gift of chance.

Coco Before Chanel (2009)
I saw Coco Before Chanel the other day. Being prepared for something more girly than that, I felt sad and attacked by lurking sadness in the heart of such an iconic figure. Then I read Roger Ebert's appraisal for the film's unsentimental approach to Chanel's early years, and I couldn't agree more; Coco had a tough childhood, being one of many children of a single mother, who died very early. She was raised up by strict nuns, and had even more adventures until she started her hat-making business. Casual clothing for holidays in the seaside followed. Until she became Chanel and she started ruling the fashion world.

Le Havre or An African Container and its Consequences
Aki Kaurismaki always had two ambivalent qualities in his films: the ability to keep a certain distance, on the opposite side of let's say Hollywood, that tries to force feelings -either in its soaked-to-tears dramas or its feel-good comedies- and a certain naive take on life and its adventures. He can observe the world with an innocent child's eyes or he can let one of his characters do so; if you are acquainted with his filmography, you certainly know what I mean. Likewise, a retro feeling is usually present, even if his stories are situated in our very much post-modern world.

Sabrina Ouazani is an Algerian Beauty
But Lambert Wilson is an asshole. An ignorant. A peasant. To put in nicer, no real gentleman. I'm sure most of you landed on this page via Google search you know the incident better than me -it dates back to spring 2010. The setting: an actress in her twenties -one that takes everything with a smile, the failure of an actor in his fifties, Cannes Film Festival; they co-star in the film, they have a photo call together. She is ravishing, and she is probably his (poor girl); he wants to show off, which he shamelessly does. Lambert Wilson has the nerve to be inappropriately intimate with Sabrina Ouazani in front of thousands of cameras and photo journalists, consecutively in front of the millions of gossip fans. He then feels ashamed and kisses the producer, too, to make his faux pas a bit lighter. Or my story is just fictional and he wanted to attract attention to his bad boy(?) persona. Whatever, idiot; stay in your black list for good.

French Film Titles: a Story to Tell

Day in, day out last week I was flipping through the pages of a French Culture Publication called Spectacles a Metz that covers, take a wild guess: the spectacles around Metz, naturally, in La Moselle area, France. It is an interesting publication with a wide variety of spectacles -music, theatre, expositions and everything else culture-wise- but let me narrow down the results of my search, it's always cinema that has the priority here, you know it.
I had endless laughs every time I was opening the page to the cinema section, called Ciné, so sweet; it was the best time of the day indeed, not only for the laughing part, but also for the relaxation involved with going to the loo, I had the aforementioned publication in my private collection in my restroom, did I forget to mention that?

I am not a F**king Princess

Did you know that Nick Cave has a hunk of a son, Jethro Cave, who works as a model and, less so, as an actor?
Did you ever consider of dethroning a Queen, for example French Cinema Thespian Isabelle Huppert?
Do you occasionally admit to yourself that you kinda like Lolitas?
I was in Amsterdam two days ago, and, as boring as I may be, I found myself secluded in an down town cinema small as a doll house, watching one of the films of the Cine Premieres 2011, Frans Film Festival Program. TV5 MONDE and Institut Français do a good job, apparently; they achieve exposure of French films all over the place (I remember we have a beloved Festival du Film Francophone in Athens, GR, aussi).
The film I saw with funny Dutch subtitles, My Little Princess, is the semi-autobiographical and directorial debut of French actress Eva Ionesco, not to be taken for Eugène's daughter, cause she is not. She is, though, the daughter of somehow known photographer Irina Ionesco, of the erotica genre; and for that matter the abused daughter.

Much Ado About Nothing
I have been quite busy dealing with cinema lately, old and new, but nothing was astounding enough to make me contribute a whole post to it. Or, better, I was enthused with an old Hitchcock and then planning to write a short and funny post on exploitation cinema and even to start swearing (always in a post) at church and monks and sins and all that --apparently Vincent Cassel did not manage to console my rage against the machine of faith-- but, guess what: no time to lose in reciting these days, I am busy doing. No time to step back and see if I did it right, why, how, could I do it better, could I have not done it at all or this and that.I will find some time soon, for the moment I can only hold you back, keep you away from going to watch Le Moine with Cassel, it is slow-paced, banale, uninspired and with a horrible ending. It depicts faith with bleak colours, but it still pisses me off to see that believers still exist nonetheless.
Then, here comes a funny trivium, and also pure evidence on the heavy smoking that takes place in film shootings: when Vincent walks towards the city to visit a certain house and give some comfort with his words to a miserable mother, we clearly see a cigarette end laying on the ground. Someone forgot to clean the place and then someone else didn't bother to do the right editing to erase its trace --maybe he thought that the audience is dumb and/or blind. But, there was something that the film got right: the omnipotent carnal lust.
It is there, believe me; even a bright spirit is unable to fight it, god knows why.

Bernie or can gratuitous violence be funny?
Less than a decade ago a French boy in Caen, Normandie introduced me to Albert Dupontel: the intro was short, sth like "I will show you a film by a guy I really like. He does everything, acting, directing, script-writing. And his sense of humour rocks". It was like this that I watched Le Createur; I cannot recall much, I guess it did not impress me as much as expected. I do remember the guy had a disturbing face, though.
Yesterday night in Brussels a German boy insisted on us (Michael, Manos, me and himself) watching a film of his choice, a "very funny, but a bit sick" film, as he said. "Do you know Bernie"? he asked, but the only Bernie I knew was the one of Weekend at Bernie's (1989). It slowly transpired that Bernie was Albert Dupontel's first feature film, crazy and not belonging to any discernible film genre, but belonging nevertheless to my favourite philosophical trend of my academic years: post-modernism.
Bernie (1996) was nominated for a César in the Meilleure Première Oeuvre (Best First Work) category, which comes as quite a surprise, thinking of the guts that they had at the Césars back then, as now they are far more conservative in their choices of the contestants --and this film is definitely no film for the mass audience.
Checking online, I see that people who gave Bernie a chance a long time after it went out in the cinemas, understand its place among the cult French films, talk a lot about its "second degré" quality --a phrase basically aknowledging that the film can only be understood on a second level, which differentiates from the obvious message that the image on the screen sends out-- but they do not cheer for it all that much. Which basically proves that they do not get it.
After this lengthy introduction, I can cut the long story short and say what I have to say about this French bizzarerie: it goes among the same lines with Sitcom (1998) by Francois Ozon and other provocative films of that time, when certain directors tried to experiment with the medium itself and not so much with the content. Having that in mind, the viewer can find a safe way to read and enjoy such kind of films, but it definitely needs some training for those who are easily disturbed by gratuitous violence, immoral/paranoid characters and vulgarity in general. Let me remind you Clockwork Orange (which scores of course at a totally different quality level) and its not-easy-to digest scenes of violence and sexual assault. That one falls under the category of a parable on personal freedom and choice, but what I'm trying to say is that both films require a key in order for them to be read correctly and not insulting the viewer with their excess.
To answer to the question "what is this film all about" I would summarize some of its qualities, without analysing them much. Being a parody, Bernie is not actually creating violence by itself, it just immitates and drives to the extreme filmic text that is already out there; a) it plays with the world "enculé", a common french insult in French films and it visualises it for the pure fun of it --which can be a bit disgusting, though b) it questions the clichés of representation for a number of things like the happy family, the romantic couple, the quest for identity and it even takes over the famous --already from the Greek tragedies-- scene of identification between two relatives after a long time i.e. Orestes and Electra etc and makes good fun of it. c) it references numerous film genres and uses the pastiche technique to create one entity out of them: the film starts as a quest for identity drama, goes on finely depicting a psychopath, thus getting closer to films describing mind-disturbed characters and their need to fit in, then takes over the family hatred genre like War of the Roses and continues in a never-ending play of mix and match, with a very funny parody of the hostage liberation films towards the end. d) the main character uses a camera to recite his wonderful deeds, as a critique to self-referentiality and issues of self-consciousness. These are only some examples of the thick layering of the film.
After all that fuss, yes, gratuitous violence can certainly be funny, especially if it is read in the proper way and if it gets the right distance from any attempt to be measured with aesthetics in mind --well, unfortunately issues of aesthetics cannot always be applied. But I do understand people who cannot relate to such a complicated reading of such a random, yet such a complex film; then I guess I have to add a last comment: it can only be fully enjoyed by French speaking audience.
P.S. A big thank you to Ollie, who gave me the opportunity to think a little bit more on the topic.

The Illusionist (2010)

Winning the Golden Globe in its category would not make The Illusionist any better or any worse (it didn't). Images and characters have a great way to get by, even without what I would call a decent story, but a muted storyline that gives us less that we would ideally want from it.
The Illusionist is a Tati-esque character, a wandering magician at the times when magic is totally out. The audience opts for other popular entertainment and he finds almost no one to entertain until a moment when a girl with old shoes appreciates what others cannot. She follows him to Edinburgh and cares for him until she becomes a swan and has to choose life.
The scenario dates back to Jacques Tati, originally meant to feature actors instead of animation, but the choice is superb and the visual character of the film is undoubtedly its strongest point. Scanty dialogue, slow pace and melancholic mood, a rare treat for these times that we are in bad need of an ambient film, not a demanding one in terms of comprehension and attention.
Unlike Les Triplettes de Belleville Sylvain's Chomet previous oeuvre, this one is not vividly filled with grotesque moments and pleasant turmoil; it is a quiet tear falling down from eyes witnessing beauty in the lights of Edinburgh city by night. With the reminiscence of departing trains, children growing up and leaving, like arrows, our encouraging lap.

Εκεί και μόνο ήθελα να καταλήξω, και βαριέμαι τώρα να λέω περισσότερα. Τι θα ήταν αυτή η ταινία χωρίς το χαριτωμένο παιδάκι ή με ένα παιδάκι λιγότερο χαριτωμένο ή με ένα παιδάκι όχι τόσο παιδάκι, αλλά πιο πολύ παιδί;

Lave

Βέβαια, είναι και το Vicky Cristina Barcelona: όσο κι αν ο Woody Allen is not my thing, το teaming up της Scarlett και της Penelope, ακούγεται, εχμ, αρκετά...
