The Hairdresser's Husband is here to welcome you

Roger Ebert, the man who knows too much, recently added Le Mari de La Coiffeuse (1990) -as the original French title goes- in his list of Great Movies. "It is about our foolish dreams", he writesThe Hairdresser's Husband is not only a great movie. It's a great, (imaginary) place, where people dare to be different, live disconnected from society and whichever norms it sets, where people are free to exist as they please with their sole compass crazy fantasies and childhood aspirations.

Jean Rochefort and Anna Galiena make an unusual couple; in his forties, he proposes the fist time he sees her, while she is about to finish giving him a haircut on a leather chair in her barber's shop. He doesn't even know her name. He pays and excuses himself before he leaves, only to come back two weeks after for one more haircut. She accepts his proposal before he has the time to tell her his name, let alone repeat the proposal itself. A calm life full of consuming passion awaits them.

After the most unconventional wedding scene I ever remember watching, after an uninterrupted fixation for one another, after many idle days and afternoons where Antoine does nothing but silently adores his long-awaited hairdresser wife Mathilde, the spell is broken. Ten years of peaceful co-existence, during which no friends, children or other incidents spoil their romantic bubble are too good to be true. Mathilde melancholically  sways in her 50s print dresses and wavy hair, content with the present, but with a hidden fear for the future. Too scared of the realistic possibility of suddenly facing loss, she decides to leave first.

Frantic (1988)

fran·tic (adj.)
1. Highly excited with strong emotion or frustration; frenzied: frantic with worry.
2. Characterized by rapid and disordered or nervous activity: made a frantic last-minute search for the lost key.
3. Archaic Mad; insane.

That's how  the Free Dictionary defines the title that Roman Polanski gave to his exciting thriller, and it got it all correct. There is a certain unpleasant incident/situation that makes Dr Richard Walker -played by a Harrison Ford who seems to be in his thirties, but is in his early forties instead- frantic in every possible sense; he is definitely frustrated, very emotional, making nervous/random efforts to re-establish order and he is taken for mentally ill for his efforts, not only by the police, but also by other people in his entourage.

The story goes like this: Dr Richard Walker, an American doctor arrives in Paris for a certain professional convention with his wife, expecting to have a second honeymoon of sorts. Having left their children back home, they expect some thrill for a change, to forget their peaceful  (read mundane) life, but not a thrill of this kind. They hardly had a relaxing shower in their hotel room (a reference to the shower scene we will never forget, hail Hitchcock), and Mr Walker realizes that Mrs Walker has gone missing. Nobody wants to take him seriously, but he is certain his wife knows no one in town and she would never leave without letting him know first.

Moonrise Kingdom

My mind and body is still full of Greece, but I have to adjust my settings for a northern country now. Things get all-confused, when you live between countries, don't they? We state we want the excitement of it, but it gets too hard to handle emotionally. In Athens, Greece racist groups beat up defenceless refugees in dark places, while the rest of us go out. We know it, but we try to pretend we don't, because we are scared, or just too busy with ourselves. One of these stagnant, pre-elections night, I went out in Athens, like everybody else, to watch a movie in an open-air cinema.

Great Expectations

Is it a winning strategy to have great expectations from life? Maybe not, but, I was born a demanding soul. We ought to have great expectations from life, from people, from the Arts. Art exists to give us that extra something, in the first place, so how wouldn't we be demanding with it? I am always on the look out for the best in music, theatre, visual art, cinema --sure, there's personal taste involved in that.

That said, I have my highly demanding moments, when I enter the cinema furious to suck up the ultimate photography, some popular philosophy in the form of witty lines, exquisite costumes and fine soundtrack, a sense of perfect harmony of image and script, of exterior and interior. In many cases, disappointment follows. It's not funny to seek for completeness -which art in any form is capable of providing amply- and to get tricked; it occasionally hurts, and that's where sarcasm comes from. After many such disappointments, you end up going to the cinema with no expectations at all, or expectations so low that could wipe the floor. It's only then that you get rewarded. Life sucks, sometimes.

Η Betty Blue της νεαρότατης Beatrice Dalle μου προξένησε πολύ πόνο. Η εισαγωγική σκηνή, πάντως, ελάχιστο αποκάλυπτε από όλο αυτό τον πόνο. Η πιο ερωτική ερωτική σκηνή που είδα ποτέ, μου φάνηκε βέβαια εκ των υστέρων, επαρκής προάγγελος του λυπημένου τέλους. Άραγε δε μοιάζουν οι σπασμοί και οι κραυγές της ηδονής με το θάνατο; Ένα έμβολο που σε τρυπάει δε μπορεί παρά να θέλει να σε σκοτώσει, όχι; Γίνεται ν’ αγαπάς αυτόν που σε σκοτώνει;

Cassavetes' Shadows: Ambiguous Love

Is it difficult to fall in love? Not really. Does it take time to bloom and flourish? Based on the cinematic facts we have here, it does not seem so. Lelia falls in love with Tony at first sight. She then forgets her good manners and kisses him in front of David to provide evidence on her belief that “if you are yourself, you can’t get hurt”. She is wrong, because she does get hurt in the end. Moreover, it is exactly as David told her: “You can’t always see it coming”. At least, she certainly did not.

Lelia does not even realise that she falls in love. She plays her ordinary game of seduction until it is too late and she loses control. “Who do you belong to, Lelia?” Tony asks her. Feminine is very often discussed in terms of belonging. Girls belong to their father, until they are trade for and become the property of their husband. Levinas, though, leaves some space for equality here between the two sexes: “ Nothing is further from Eros than possession. In the possession of the Other I possess the Other inasmuch as he possesses me; I am both slave and master.”[1] “Well, I belong to me”, bravely responds Lelia, because she did not yet encounter any power that can make her lose control over herself. This power is slowly approaching, Eros will not only make her eager enough to renounce her freedom and seek a uniting bond with her lover, but he will make her both the slave and the master in a way that she would not feel losing her freedom, since, at the same time she makes her lover lose his freedom in his turn.

“Love remains a relation with the Other that turns into need, and this need still presupposes the total, transcendent exteriority of the other, of the beloved.”[2] This is supposed to be the feelings of the same towards the other; i.e. the feelings of Tony towards Lelia. But love can be mutual and this feeling can be inverted, to my opinion. And it is Lelia here who sees her love become need. Lelia is ready for commitment and a more close bond with Tony. She presupposes that love means need, she thinks that Tony must feel the same way and such a question of living together is for her natural. Her lover finds it startling; he cannot be in love yet. She is hurt; she only wants to go home, to the safe closed space for the feminine. Later on, she welcomes him into her home, but he does not show dignity of this welcoming. The situation fails him: he has learnt in his life to abhor total otherness, which for him takes the form of racial otherness. His warm feelings change, a fight occurs between him and Hugh, Lelia’s protective brother and he leaves the house. Lelia cries in her brother’s arms. “But, I love him so much” she exclaims. Is that different from “but, I need him so much?” she says it in the same despair, the same loss of hope. She feels pain, because love is clearly ambiguous. Her love is not altruistic or unselfish, it is not pure love. It is not a love of giving; it is a love of taking—it is a love-need. She cannot be happy if he is happy somehow, somewhere, but she can be happy only if he is there with her, only if he loves her. She is hungry for his hunger.[3]

As soon as he finds out her second layer of otherness, though, he moves to a trajectory of repent. Her quality as other doubles; this is the main reason that he does not forget her, I think. This is why he phones back to ask for forgiveness over his rude behaviour, why he sends his friend as an intermediary, why he goes himself to the house, only to find her leaving with her new date. But then, this is how Irigaray talks about the woman that becomes part of her male lover’s world. “Keeping herself on the threshold, perhaps.”[4] This is what Lelia succeeds in not doing: to stay inside.

Comeback

Πες μου ένα πράγμα μόνο: τι λες εσύ πως είναι η αγάπη; Αλήθεια ή ψέματα; Γιατί το μυαλό μου δεν μπορεί να βρει άκρη. Θα ξυπνήσω και θα είμαι μόνη; Ή είμαι μόνη και αγκαλιάζω φαντάσματα;
